Oh cool! Another person I know just got engaged! And another vodka soda just got poured down my throat.
How come no one told me when you turn 24, suddenly everyone gets engaged over the holidays? Maybe because they knew I’d get the idea in my head to fuck up a perfectly wonderful relationship, JUST TO BE DIFFERENT! Hey, Nick, want to break up?

dinner dilemmas, OR today's white whine
If there is a U.S. city more inhospitable to vegetarians than New Orleans, I haven’t found it yet. There is not a single veggie restaurant in the entire city. Most restaurants, especially the kind my family frequents, fall into the neighborhood/creole/home-cookin’ category, which means gravy-drenched meat poboys, fried seafood platters, and cream and butter-laden stews. Even...

went to rock and bowl tonight to see old high school friends and their siblings and old white people dance to kermit ruffins. it’s completely different now. it doesn’t smell. the entire complex is this strange sterile mini-mall with a slick niketown and a well-lit parking lot out front. a far cry from its old incarnation, a seedy strip of stores underneath the interstate. holy...

Pumpkin cinnamon rolls for breakfast and potato leek soup and kale for dinner. Mmm. Now we have to get ready for Mimi’s Christmas Eve party, the only time in the entire year I see my...

Patient H.M. Dies at 82
Henry Gustav Molaison lived in incredible life. In 1953, a surgery to treat an intractable case of epilepsy left Molaison unable to form new memories. Sue Corkin and other researchers’ work with patient H.M. (as he was known to researchers and students everywhere, to protect his privacy) provided enormous insight into how our brains form and store memories.
